When a Toyota oil change is due and how long it takes
Engine oil cuts friction between moving parts and carries heat away from the engine. Toyota service is due every 6 months or 5,000 miles. A Toyota that calls for 0W-20 synthetic oil needs the oil itself changed every 10,000 miles or 12 months.
At Dalton Toyota National City, our FasTrack Express Service handles the maintenance a Toyota needs most often, starting with the oil change. A factory-trained, two-technician team works on each car, and each visit includes factory-recommended oil and a new oil filter.
We serve owners across San Diego County, from La Mesa and El Cajon to Chula Vista, Bonita and Imperial Beach.

How a Toyota oil change visit goes
Step 1 Oil and filter
We drain and refill the engine with factory-recommended oil, replace the oil filter and reset the maintenance indicator light.
Step 2 Tire rotation
We rotate the tires so they wear evenly and last longer. Then we reset the Tire Pressure Monitor System light.
Step 3 The multi-point inspection
We check the fluids and look over every major system. The brake inspection confirms the pads still have a safe thickness.
Step 4 Status and history
With ToyotaCare, you get a reminder before the next scheduled maintenance, and we add the visit to your service history.

Oil and filter, tire rotation and a multi-point inspection in one visit
A Toyota that calls for 0W-20 synthetic oil needs the oil changed every 10,000 miles or 12 months. A service visit is due every 6 months or 5,000 miles.
Service requirements and intervals vary by model.
Certain models follow a different maintenance schedule.
The vehicle's Maintenance Guide sets the factory-recommended service and intervals.
The first maintenance visit is at 5,000 miles, and the next is at 10,000 miles. We follow the Maintenance Guide for each model and year, so a Corolla and a Tundra each get their own schedule.
I hardly drive my car. Is an oil change still due?
Yes. Toyota counts months as well as miles. On 0W-20 synthetic oil, the oil is changed every 12 months even at low miles, and a service visit is due every 6 months.
A car driven only around town often reaches six months before 5,000 miles.
On a 2027 Toyota, ToyotaCare covers up to two services when the car comes due by time.
Those two are the 5,000-mile and the 10,000-mile maintenance.
A Corolla driven only to work and back usually comes due by the calendar. At that visit, we change the oil and filter, rotate the tires and do the multi-point inspection.
Is the oil change covered by ToyotaCare?
On a new Toyota, yes. ToyotaCare covers normal factory scheduled maintenance at no cost.
Model year 2026 and earlier: 2 years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Model year 2027: 1 year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Covered: engine oil and filter change, tire rotation, multi-point inspection, and inspecting and adjusting fluid levels.
ToyotaCare comes with every new Toyota, purchased or leased, so there is nothing to sign up for. Our Toyota-trained technicians do the covered visits, and you get a reminder before each one.
Can my tires be rotated at the same visit?
Yes. FasTrack Express Service includes a tire rotation, which helps the tires wear evenly and last longer. Our technicians also reset the Tire Pressure Monitor System light.
For the oil change, we drain and refill with factory-recommended oil and replace the oil filter.
The multi-point inspection checks the fluids and the major systems.
It includes a brake inspection.
A tire inspection is recommended at each regular service visit.
FasTrack completes the work in an estimated 30 minutes or less with an appointment.
Does the Dalton VIP Program earn anything on an oil change?
Yes. Members earn rewards back with each service transaction, an oil change included.
Points can go toward the next tire purchase and install.
Points can also go toward the next vehicle purchase.

I came for a change oil. They look at my service history and noticed I was past due for a couple of maintenance items. I said okay and they took care of it and even provided me a rental car.
1. The Toyota service schedule, in months and miles
Service is due every 6 months or 5,000 miles. Each car's Maintenance Guide lists its factory-recommended services and intervals. Certain models follow a different schedule.
How you drive decides which comes first. A car that only runs errands around National City reaches six months before it reaches 5,000 miles. A car that commutes on the 805 every day reaches 5,000 miles first.
The oil the engine calls for sets how often the oil itself is changed.
0W-20 synthetic required: every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.
0W-20 as an option to 5W-20 or 5W-30: every 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first, even with 0W-20 in the engine.
Special Operating Conditions: every 5,000 miles, whatever the oil. They include towing a trailer, driving off-road or on dirt roads, long idling and repeated short trips below 32°F.
Our service advisors confirm the work for your model and year at check-in.
A Toyota hybrid has a gas engine as well as electric motors, so it still needs oil changes. Its Maintenance Guide sets the services and intervals, as it does on a gas Toyota.
